Oval Coil Pandanus Basket

 Pandanus weaving:

Weavers gather fresh young leaves from the pandanus palm, then strip and dry them. Pandanus strips are then boiled up on the campfire using natural dyes obtained from a number of different roots, leaves, flowers, berries and leaves in the region. This coiled fibre baskets are the result of rich cultural and artistic expression made in Maningrida, Elcho Island and Oenpelli.
